Image
Good afternoon (or morning) everyone. I hope all are doing well. I am going to start off by talking about why I chose this topic. A few years ago, I went on vacation out of the country to Punta Canta, Dominican Republic. The people there were so nice and always happy. It is not the best looking place to live, unlike America. It is the usual foreign country. They are always cheerful and grateful for what they have and it is amazing. Now I am going to take you on a trip to the wonderful country of Dominican Republic. I hope you all enjoy! Dominican Republic Dominican Republic is known for their dancing talents. The citizens will dance anywhere from the park to their own houses. There are two popular genres, merengue and bachata.  Merengue is the national music and dance of DR. They believe the merengue is a part of the Dominican essence. The lyrics of this music shares life stories and about everyday life. Instruments oriented with the merengue are   g ΓΌ ira and tambour. T...

Cool Stuff 4: Arabic and Indian Music

Image
Hello everyone. Welcome to my blog. Today, I am going to be discussing some interesting facts I have found about Arabic/Indian music. I hope you all enjoy. Tabla We have discussed this instrument in class, but I wanted to go a little more in depth.  The tabla has been around since the 18th century. It was first used in northern India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. The tabla usually tuned to the ground note of the raga. There is two different drums to be played. The right side being called the Bahina, and the left being called the Bayan. In the beginning the table was only associated with courtesan dance traditions, but now they are used for many different musical genres.  Dance Dancing in Indian has been a big traditions. They believe the gods invented dancing. Dancing incorporates melody, drama, form, and line. The hand gestures/movements are a primary importance. There are almost over a hundred different movements. The movements are called...

Big Blog #1: Early Country

Image
Early Country Country music began from Appalachian.  It began in the early 1900's.  In 1920, the first country genre record was made. Country music was one of the first genres to make it to the top of the modern American popular music. If you haven't ever listened to country music, it all revolves around heartbreak and love.  Jimmie Rodgers , The Father of Country Music , had instant success.  His first record hits were recorded between 1927 and 1933.  Rodgers later died from tuberculosis. In 1961, he was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. He used a famous technique called yodeling.  The Grand Ole Opry was a very popular program for live music, located in Nashville, Tennessee. At this time, Western music came into play. This insisted of lovesick cowboys and gun-fighting outlaws.  This is my favorite song by artist Willie Nelson. This song has become one of his signature songs.  Di...

Music & Gender

Image
Music and Gender  Hello everyone! I wanted to start off by saying I hope everyone has had an amazing week. In this blog, I will be specifically talking about Music and Gender. I hope you all enjoy it! Stereotypes  play a big part in this subject.  As I grew up, most people assumed white males listened to country music and black males listened to rap. That is not the case always. Music preference comes from where you are raised. As a child, the younger white females were "raised on  Hannah Montana and Taylor Swift". As most people perceive , black females listened to old R&B female artists.  Gender has NOTHING to do with music. There are some circumstances where it does, but with your preference it does not. You are allowed to be white and listen to rap or R&B. You can also be colored and listen to country music.  I will now take you into a step in my life. As a child, Yes I always listened to Disney music and danced around my living r...

Cool Stuff No. 2 : South America

Image
South America Argentina and Uruguay - The most famous type of music is called the tango. The moves in the tango were made by late-night call girls. Also, a man with the name of Carlos Gardel moved the dance to France. The tango was regulated in the 1880's. Tango is very popular, because it is shared between two people together.  The tango dance is traced back to the slums that are located in Buenos Aires.  Bolivia - Bolivia is known to be colorful and joyful. Bolivia is also known for the tradition called Folklorico. This certain tradition os mainly used in street parades. A certain genre for the Folklorico is Morenada. The Morenada has a certain meaning or story behind it about African slaves brought in to work by the Spanish. During this event, the men wear black mask with long beards and the women wear skirts with colorful blouses.  Columbia - Columbia is known for the Salsa. I have always found this dance very interesting, because I could never do it. Salsa is known f...

Blog #3: Music and Religion

Image
Music and Religion I want to start this blog off by explaining my christian experience. As a child, I was raised in a Baptist Church and I went all the time. From signing hymns to sitting quiet in the congregation.  As I grew older and got into sports, I began to fall out of church. I began to have practices during church times and slowly stopped going. Recently I changed my whole life around. I started going to a Pentecostal Church. Yes, at the beginning they are very scary and nerve recking. As I continued going, I learned many new ways to worship.    Pentecostal church style is mainly using worship and praising to the Holy Spirit to get closer to Jesus. They use techniques such as , talking in tongues, prophecy, healing, and exorcism ( the gifts of God). They experience the presence of God within themselves. Pentecostal Churches do not sit and listen to the preacher. They are engaged in every second of the service. During Praise and Worship services, you will hav...

Cool Stuff No. 1 : Native American Music

Image
Jingle Dance   The jingle dancing really caught my eye. The jingle dance is a special dance performed by the women of the Native American culture. This dance is  usually performed at Powwows for competitions. The women personally design their dresses and add metal cones (ziibaaska'iganan ) for noise. The  jingle  dress was  originally  founded in a dream. Also the dance came about for healing purposes. The  jingle  dress was  originally  named a " Prayer Dress". The dancers move their  feet  to the sound of the drums and usually have a feather in one hand and the other on their  hipp . Clothing The clothing of Native Americans were very different,  which  I love. Men wore breechclouts and  moccasins. Women usually wore more full-length dress. Their clothing also depended on the weather. In the winter, they would usually wear more layers of clothing. Native American clothing was made mainly of cotton. They al...
