Cool Stuff 4: Arabic and Indian Music

Hello everyone. Welcome to my blog. Today, I am going to be discussing some interesting facts I have found about Arabic/Indian music. I hope you all enjoy.

Tabla

We have discussed this instrument in class, but I wanted to go a little more in depth.  The tabla has been around since the 18th century. It was first used in northern India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. The tabla usually tuned to the ground note of the raga. There is two different drums to be played. The right side being called the Bahina, and the left being called the Bayan. In the beginning the table was only associated with courtesan dance traditions, but now they are used for many different musical genres.

Dance

Dancing in Indian has been a big traditions. They believe the gods invented dancing. Dancing incorporates melody, drama, form, and line. The hand gestures/movements are a primary importance. There are almost over a hundred different movements. The movements are called Mudras. There are four main aspects to dancing in India:

1) Technique of movement

2) Vocal and instrument sounds

3) Involuntary Action

4) Make-up , Costumes

Clothing

In India, there are 28 different states and every one of them have their own clothing traditions. I will discuss a few different types of traditions.
1) Andhra Pradesh - Men usually wear Kurta and Dhoti. Muslim men wear pajamas with Kurta. Woman are known to wear saree.
2) Assam- Traditional dress for men are called dhoti-kurta. Women clothing are called Mekhela- chador. These dresses are made from muga silk.

  4. Your blog was really interesting! I enjoyed looking into the Indian dances and I liked how you went into the fashion. From what I've seen, sarees are beautiful and very decorative clothing. It's so weird to think about how India is a union of states just like the US, each one with their own culture, food and fashion.

  5. I really enjoyed going through your blog, and going more into depth about the tabla drums. I also did clothing within Islamic and Arabic culture, and I liked that you talked about the clothing that men wear, whether it is traditional or nontraditional. I read about all the silks, and threads that they use, and found that it was very interesting and cool.
